A Passion For Nursing

Blake is a registered nurse and received his BSN from the University of Central Florida. He has worked in a number of healthcare roles throughout his career and has managed several injury prevention programs and started Banned4Life, which ended an outdated FDA blood donor policy. Today, Blake is an advocate for nurses and patients and encourages a healthy work environment. He is a writer, public speaker, and has been a paid contributor to the New York Times.

Speaking & Education

Blake is passionate about community outreach and public speaking.  He has presented at a wide variety of healthcare summits and nursing conferences on topics ranging from bleeding control to creating healthy work environments.

The Banned4Life Project

Back in 2013, Blake started the Banned4Life project to end the FDA’s blood donor policy which permanently banned gay and bisexual males. Over the period of 2 years, Banned4Life blood drives were held around the nation to educate the public on this outdated policy. We encouraged eligible donors to donate blood in place of those who were banned and collected petition signatures. Thanks to all the work from Banned4Life supporters and volunteers, in December of 2015, the FDA decided to lift the lifetime ban.

Healthcare Experience

At the age of 17, Blake started working in healthcare. He has been a patient transporter, surgical assistant, patient care tech, and nurse. As a nurse, he has experience in med-surg, ICU, and community health. This wide-range of positions has given him unique insight into the healthcare system. He wants to use this insight into creating more positive experiences for both patients and nurses.

Injury Prevention

While working at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Houston, Blake found his passion for preventing traumatic injuries. The top 2 traumatic injuries in Houston were from falls and motor vehicle crashes. He developed strategic plans to educate community residents and stakeholders on how to prevent traumatic injuries from these main causes. He taught the evidence-based A Matter of Balance Program to older adults to reduce their fear of falling while increasing physical activity. He coordinated numerous motor vehicle crash prevention programs including, Shattered Dreams to prevent injuries and fatalities from impaired and distracted driving.
